High School ScienceEver since we started working in the Kelafo area 10 years ago, the elders have been asking us to help improve the science program at the local high school. There is no science lab in the high school so students never get any hands-on experience. Due to budget constraints we have not been able to help out with this request until now. One of our new projects in 2020 will be purchasing science lab kits and providing the science teachers with training on how to use the materials with their classes.
While meeting with the Ministry of Education last summer, they confirmed that science is an area of need thoughout the Somali region, not just in Kelafo. They reported to us that out of 196 high schools in the Somali region, only 10 have working science labs. Our short term goal is to support 10 high schools in the area with the hope that we will secure enough funds to support the remaining schools in the future. Through research we discovered Quality Science Labs Ltd. which is a company in Kenya that manufactures portable science kits for high schools. These kits are designed to be used in a regular classroom with no special lab equipment necessary. They are specialized for each grade level (9, 10, 11 and 12) and for each subject in the science strand (Chemistry, Biology and Physics). Each kit comes with step-by-step instructions for various activities and there are enough materials in the lab kits for them to be used several times (materials can be replaced as needed). We hope to purchase 2 - 4 of each kit for each of the 10 schools and we want to hire an experienced teacher to provide those teachers with additional training. |
