Mobile Resource Teacher
We have been funding a full-time mobile teacher since 2009. He is a qualified teacher and former principal who uses a donkey and cart to travel between 5 villages in the area. He spends one day a week in each of the villages, dividing his time between training the government hired teachers and working with the parents to create Parent Councils. He also carries educational supplies in his cart such as notebooks, pencils and some sports equipment that he gives to schools as needed.
Most of the villages in the Somali Region now have schools but the majority of teachers are not qualified which means that students are not always learning the proper curriculum. Our qualified teacher has many years of teaching experience, was a principal and worked for the School Board. He demonstrates good teaching practices, reinforces use of the government curriculum and provides the government teachers with resources to use in the classroom. We are supporting 78 teachers this year by equipping them with the skills they need to educate children and providing on-going support throughout the school year.
Education 4 Change has worked with thousands of students in 7 different villages. This year there are 2224 students receiving the benefits of our Mobile Resource Program. Unfortunately there are 40 villages in just the Kelafo area and hundreds more villages and towns in the rest of the Somali Region so this is only a small start. With your help, we would like to hire more mobile resource teachers so that we can service more villages and help to improve their schools as well.
Parent Councils
Our Mobile Resource Teacher encourages parents to send all of their children to school - boys and girls - and to become involved in their children's education. He talks to them about the obstacles that prevent them from sending their children to school and helps them find ways to overcome these. He also educates the parents about how they can work together to make the government-hired teachers more accountable and how to advocate for the needs of the school and the community.
The Donkey Cart The donkey cart is equipped with needed educational resources as well as sports equipment such as balls, nets, etc. The villages provide food and water for the teacher and the donkey.

We can always use cash donations. They help to cover the costs of shipping books and resources to the Somali region, as very few resources can actually be purchased in the area. Cash donations also pay for educational supplies and cover the teachers and librarians salaries. Please visit our Donate page if you'd like to help out.
