Teacher Training Institute
We have partnered with the Educator and Leadership Institute (ELI) which is affiliated with Wilfrid Laurier University. They work to build teaching and leadership capacity in communities globally by bringing Canadian educators to work side-by-side with teachers in other countries. The first ELI was launched in northern Haiti in August 2016 and continues to support educators in science, mathematics, critical literacy, early learning, special education and school leadership. Since then ELI has expanded and run similar programs in Egypt and Nepal.
They are helping us to organize a Teacher's Training Institute for teachers in the Somali Region of Ethiopia in July 2020. This training will be held in the city of Jijiga and will be a smaller, "pilot" version of their regular Institutes. The plan is to have 5 to 10 Canadian educators travel to Ethiopia to run training |
sessions with approx. 100 - 150 teachers from the Somali region. The sessions use a “train the trainer” model so that the teachers who attend the conference will then be able to transfer their knowledge to others once returning home.
The sessions for this summer’s institute will focus on teaching science and teaching English as a second language. The Ministry of Education for the Somali Region has identified those 2 areas as the most in need of improvement. If this pilot project is successful we will continue to offer these sessions each summer and invite up to 400 teachers each year to receive the training. If each of these teachers reaches out and shares their learnings with a couple of co-workers we will be able to reach a huge number of teachers. |
